Ukrainiečių kalba „Horilka“ arba rusiškai „Vodka“ yra paprastai bespalvis skystis, dažniausiai distiliuojamas iš fermentuotų grūdų. Paprastai manoma, kad šis terminas paimtas iš slavų kalbos žodžio „voda“ (woda), reiškiančio „vanduo“. Ukrainiečių kalboje „vodka“ yra „horilka“ (žodžių šaknis reiškia „deginti“).
Išskyrus nežymius kvapiųjų medžiagų kiekius, horilka susideda iš vandens ir alkoholio (etanolio). Horilkos alkoholio kiekis paprastai svyruoja nuo 35 iki 60 tūrio procentų. Klasikinė ukrainietiška arba rusiška horilka / degtinė yra 40 procentų (80 laipsnių įrodymas), šis skaičius priskiriamas garsiam rusų chemikui Dmitrijui Mendelejevui. Degtinės muziejaus Sankt Peterburge (Rusija) duomenimis, Mendelejevas manė, kad idealus procentas buvo 38, tačiau kadangi jo laikais spiritas buvo apmokestinamas pagal stiprumą, procentas buvo suapvalintas iki 40, kad būtų supaprastintas mokesčių skaičiavimas. Šiais laikais galima rasti ir 38 procentų horilkos, bet dažniausiai vadinama „Šviesa“.
Be alkoholio kiekio, horilka / degtinė gali būti suskirstyta į dvi pagrindines grupes: skaidrią ir aromatizuotą horilką. Kvapiosios medžiagos dažnai yra raudonieji pipirai, imbieras, įvairūs vaisių skoniai, vanilė, šokoladas (nesaldintas) ir cinamonas. Ukrainiečiai gamina prekybinę horilką, kurią sudaro jonažolė (augalas). Lenkai ir baltarusiai deda vietinės bizonų žolės lapų, kad pagamintų Żubrówka arba Zubrovka degtinę, kuri yra šiek tiek saldaus skonio ir šviesiai gintaro spalvos. Ukrainoje ir Rusijoje taip pat labai populiari degtinė, pagardinta medumi ir pipirais (Pertsovka, rusiškai, Pertsivka, ukrainietiškai).
